as soon as they had the reunition between sasuke and naruto earlier in shippuden, this exact plot was the only thing in my mind. like, you knew damn well sasuke had no intention of wanting to return to konoha, and the only reason he's doing this is bc of itachi, so just... leave him alone and go after itachi??? you're pursuing it differently but you have the same goal, if you can prove yourself worthy and strong enough to go head to head with itachi, and in the best case if you succeed and beat him, just hand him over to sasuke, let him do what he wishes with his brother's body, and all is well. cant believe it took them 118 episodes to be like "hey! we should actually fight the same enemy together!"

Iirc they want to stop him taking his revenge bc you know that path leads to more suffering and all that(aka Kratos), and let’s be honest at this point naruto or at least Sakura know sasuke won’t come back willingly and they gaslight themselves into training to boring him back, that or they are delusional which makes sense for naruto(as for why it took so much time for them to finally hunt itachi, I believe that will be explained later)

Yes but there is a reason revealed later on that explains why the Leaf never truly went after Itachi.
